While we were surfing at the beautiful coastal town of Mal Pais, Costa Rica, we met this delightful and inspirational family, who, as a family, opted to sell most of their belongings at their Nova Scotia home base, in order to make a move to Vancouver, Canada. However, something, a ‘knowing,’ kept gnawing at them……………and a few months into their Vancouver experience, they decided they wanted to explore the world, one region at a time.
That decision is what brought this delightful family of 6, The Lockharts, to Mal Pais, which is a cute surfing village with amazing waves and sunsets. Steve and Mia, and their four children, were in this adventure together, and their love for each and for nature was so evident on the beach the day we met. Their daily routine included a few hours of on-line school in the morning, lots of reading, adventure activities, and plenty of time in the surf.
Mia and Steve are inspiring as parents because they dared to take their children ‘off grid’ in order to appreciate the simple things in life and to teach them that you can define your self in a far greater way than grades, or which group you belong to, or what you own. In this interview, everyone agrees that the journey has not always been easy, but there have been no regrets, and there is mutual support and encouragement for each family to follow their own passion and gifts.
Steve and Mia left their regular ‘jobs’ in order to create this family travel adventure, but they have created unique new ventures along the way. Steve offers life coaching if you want help finding and speaking your truth & heart. Mia has just launched a non-profit project to support girls, women, and leaders through stand up paddle boarding. Through their writing, Mia and Steve share the joy and the vulnerabilities of all that they have learned and all that they are still learning.
One such blog is titled “Definitely Not The Jones,” in honor of their intentional choice to take the path less traveled. They are a true inspiration and honor to know. Thank you, Lockharts! Pura Vida!
